A blind post is a list that landed before anyone asked which job, which account, or which kind of visit.

The adjustment is the way back

Once an invoice has exported, the honest correction is an adjustment invoice in the field software. That adjustment exports and applies to the original transaction. Changing the books alone, and leaving the field copy as it was, sets up the next export to undo the change or to double it.

We name the months already filed before that adjustment is sent. An open month can absorb a correction. A month that has already gone into a return cannot absorb it quietly. The difference is the whole point of reading the list before the close, and it is also the point of this page when the close already happened.

Read the adjustment

A visit coded as the wrong kind of work

A busy week does the same thing in any state. Coils get replaced, and a maintenance agreement gets used as the invoice because that item is the one the technician can find. A planned visit keeps a working unit on its schedule. A coil that failed is a breakdown. The two cannot share an item if the return is going to tell the truth.

The feeling is the Saturday after a week that would not slow down. Trucks out early, the parts counter loud, the batch already posted. A maintenance item used for a broken unit does not only misname the work. It hands the return the wrong kind of cost, and a later letter asks about that cost. When a state also taxes one of those visits and not the other, that rule is on the state page.

What a clean reversal looks like

A clean reversal names the original, posts the adjustment against it, and leaves a note a person can read in a year. It does not delete the history. Deleting the history makes the bank reconciliation tell a story the field software no longer remembers.

After the adjustment, we reconcile the holding account to the deposit and the receivable to the open invoices. If those two agree, the blind post is over. If they do not, we are not done, and we will say that plainly rather than call the month closed.
